چکیده

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) associated with aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) predominantly targets the optic nerve and spinal cord and is characterized by frequent relapses and accrual of irreversible disability. Variations in clinical course may include an initial or predominant involvement in extra spinal/optic nerve locations and a benign course marked by mild attacks and minimal residual deficits. However, spontaneous remissions are rare. We are reporting 2 patients who satisfied the 2015 criteria for NMOSD and had a unique disease course highlighted by periods of spontaneous remission lasting 19 and 23 years.

Distinction between MOG antibody-positive and AQP4 antibody-positive NMO spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate clinical features among patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) who have myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibodies, aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies, or seronegativity for both antibodies. METHODS Sera from patients diagnosed with NMOSD in 1 of 3 centers (2 sites in Brazil and 1 site in Japan) were tested for MOG and AQP4 antibodies using ce...

Serum peptide reactivities may distinguish neuromyelitis optica subgroups and multiple sclerosis

OBJECTIVE To assess in an observational study whether serum peptide antibody reactivities may distinguish aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody (Ab)-positive and -negative neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). METHODS We screened 8,700 peptides that included human and viral antigens of potential relevance for inflammatory demyelinating diseas...

Aquaporin-4 antibody-positive cases beyond current diagnostic criteria for NMO spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES To analyze aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody-positive patients who do not fulfill the current diagnostic criteria of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and NMO spectrum disorders (NMOSD). METHODS We used a cell-based assay (CBA) with AQP4-transfected cells to detect AQP4 antibody in 298 consecutive patients with inflammatory CNS disorders seen at Tohoku University Hospital from 2007 to 2012. The...

Different Phenotypes at Onset in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder Patients with Aquaporin-4 Autoimmunity

BACKGROUND Although rare, brain abnormalities without optic neuritis (ON) or transverse myelitis (TM) diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) have been reported in patients positive for the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody. OBJECTIVE To analyze demographic and clinical differences among NMOSD patients without ON or TM, those with either ON or TM, and patients with simultaneou...
